I recently went for a walk with one of my mentors and the topic of ambition came up. My friend mentioned that as their high achieving peer group neared 50, their feelings and ideas around ambition were shifting.
I vividly recall the moment when I reached a high point in my tech career and realized that I no longer aspired to make the next jump. For years, I had been persistently climbing the corporate ladder, fixated on securing the next level. In the process, it occurred to me that I had lost sight of which ladder I was even climbing!
These days, I’m no less ambitious, I just work on reframing my ambition around the criteria and values that make sense for me.
In my coaching practice, we often discuss themes centred around ambition, balance, and the feeling of being stuck. To spark growth, I often encourage my clients to look deeper at their internal criteria for success , rather than adhering to the well-trodden path.
Although many of my clients are currently feeling tapped and borderline burnt out, another wise mentor of mine once said “sometimes when you add things that matter to your cup, it makes your cup bigger”
The question I would ask you is:
What if your career and life were truly FULFILLING and not just FULL? What would that feel like for you?
If you are feeling ready to explore this deeper, I’d encourage you to book a free discovery session. It could be just what you need to create that space you crave.
